SSG Kelvin Ying is originally from Edina, Minnesota. He holds a Master of Music degree from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Prior to joining The U.S. Army Field Band in 2020, he was a young artist with Pensacola Opera and Virginia Opera, playing for both educational outreach tours and mainstage productions. Production highlights include “The Crucible” (Robert Ward) and “Le nozze di Figaro” (Mozart) with the University of Tennessee Opera Theater, “Romeo et Juliette” (Gounod) and “Florencia en el Amazonas” (Daniel Catan) with Pensacola Opera, and “La Cenerentola” (Rossini) and “Aida” (Verdi) with Virginia Opera. When he is not at the keyboard, he enjoys cooking and baking excessive amounts of food, playing ultimate frisbee, and marveling at the cuteness of his cat.
